Are you ready for your cabin stay in beautiful Big Island Volcano?
La Capanna - Volcano's Legendary Lodge in Volcano Village!
La Capanna is a vacation home available for short term rental. The cabin is fully restored, with three bedrooms, two baths and a full kitchen. Volcano Village is less than a mile from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance on Big Island. The village is a small, rural place, populated by a diverse community including many artists and near a number of high quality restaurant experiences.
It is at 3800 foot elevation, with a cool and sometimes damp climate. The cabin has a wood burning stove, cable TV, internet access and local telephone service. Wireless telephone reception is excellent, with a Verizon cell site within a few hundred feet.
A trip to the Big Island should include time at the world class resorts of the Kona-Kohala Coast, and a few days or more in the cool uplands exploring the volcanoes that made the place, and are still at work.
While visiting the Volcano area, don't forget to take in the Farmer's Market on Sundays where you'll find plenty of friendly Volcano residents that are willing to share stories of the area and partake in the fresh foods and crafts made and grown locally.
This is how it all started:
My grandfather, Guido Giacometti, came to Hawaii in 1902 to work at Olaa Plantation. He had a chemical engineering degree from the Polytechnic school in Zurich. He was born in Northern Italy, which at the time was ruled by Austria. He came here because the sugar industry was expanding, and the opportunity for a young engineer was far better than staying in Europe. He assisted in the construction of the mill and its machinery, and remained Mill Superintent for more than 40 years. He bought La Capanna in the 1920s, as a weekend place away from the hot weather at lower elevations. Volcano Village had been subdivided and sold to many folks who wanted the same conditions. He spoke German, Italian and other languages, and became a good friend of Dr. Thomas A. Jaggar, the first volcanologist who lived at Volcano and helped to set up the observatory. I remember going to the Jaggar home with my grandfather, and being rather bored with the foreign language discussions that the two men held. Though Guido did not speak Greek, he was a good friend of George Lycurgus, the well-known operator of the Volcano House Hotel. The house saw plenty of use, especially during eruptions at Kilauea. After my father died and as my mother was living in Kona, she arranged with friends from Hilo to use the place often, whether or not she was there. These arrangements helped to keep the place up. My mother died in 1997, and the place was empty until we renovated it in 2002. Now we are happy to have others enjoy it as a vacation spot.
